Membership

Membership in Beta Sigma Psi is open to all communicate Lutherans. This serves as the foundation for our brotherhood, and also creates an atmosphere in which members can succeed not only in academia and socialization, but also in the spirituality of their lives. Beta Sigma Psi is an organization where we strive to create a Lutheran man who is a leader in his community, business, and church congregation. In two words, a "Lutheran Gentleman."

Non-Lutherans are also welcomed to Beta Sigma Psi. Being a religiously-based organization, however, such members will be asked to learn about the Lutheran faith and attend group worships. Any questions about the fraternity's Lutheran principles and what they mean to non-Lutherans can be answered by any of the fraternity's active members. Feel free to ask!

Hopefully, if you are interested in Beta Sigma Psi, we have already contacted you. But if this is not the case, contact any of the members to let us know! You can also use the contact us form on this website.

What is a Lutheran Gentleman?

”

While it is hard to define what makes a Lutheran gentleman, there are some common characteristics. First and foremost comes one's connection with God. This personal, intimate relationship is the foundation of a Lutheran gentleman and essentially dictates the rest of his character. The Christian faith is much more than good works; it "is a living, bold trust in God's grace" (according to Luther). This knowledge then causes one to live a radically different life from one without faith.

Following faith, a gentleman attempts to live a moral life for the betterment of Christianity and mankind. In John 13, Jesus says, "A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another." This defining rule guides Lutheran gentlemen in terms of philanthrophy and service. Whenever possible, a Lutheran gentleman lends a hand.

Lutheran gentlemen are also scholastically and socially involved. Realizing the important power education can give, gentlemen strive to acquire knowledge and experience, so that they may be more enabled in their future vocations. In the same regards, social involvement prepares a gentleman for daily life. This can mean interaction with colleagues, associates, and friends. By building a network of contacts and social skills to operate in society, a gentleman prepares to live an active life.

While old definitions of gentleman rely on the criterions of wealth and heritage, a modern gentleman is one made by the American dream. If one works hard, he earns the proper respect and worth that every man should desire. Fraternity life is designed to teach young men how to accomplish this.

In the shortest description, a Lutheran Gentleman is a Beta Sig.
